I want to use a design of an old book, which apply to an item, and sell it. Is this legal?

The book would be one of the oldest books in Scotland or Ireland and would certainly be owned by a museum or historic site that happens to have it in your collection. Will I be guilty of stealing copyrighted material if I have copied a corner of one of the illustrations? I am aware that no photos of museum piece. But are the owners of the real picture? Suppose that you copied the design of the painting myself, freehand, on the subject, is it forbidden? What enlargement of a photograph, the transfer of design to a decal, and applying this to an item? And so on.

I think the copyright has expired long ago in the book and designs him, but not in the most recent photo of the book. You can register a publicly owned library to see if permission is granted or is in the public domain.
